Appearing in 1855, My Bondage and My Freedom is the second autobiography written by Frederick Douglass (1818-95), a man who was born into slavery in Maryland and who went on to become the most. The life of Frederick Douglass, recorded in the pages which follow, is not merely an example of self elevation under the most adverse circumstances it is, moreover, a noble vindication of the highest aims of the American anti-slavery movement.
